Tasha Kheiriddin: The push to cancelCanadaDay misunderstands that our flawed nation is still worth celebrating

Over two centuries, Canada has also welcomed the downtrodden and oppressed to its shores. From Irish migrants starving during the Great Famine, to Doukhobors fleeing religious persecution, to refugees from conflicts in Vietnam, Rwanda, and Syria, Canada has taken in millions of people in search of a better life. Millions more seek to make their lives here. The reason is simple: Canada is a country that stands for freedom, equality and opportunity.

These are achievements to celebrate. They also inspire us to do better, and work harder, until they benefit all who call Canada home. They serve as a reminder of the need to clean our house — but not, as some would like, to burn to it down. Like cancellation, rejecting Canada as an illegitimate state is not a path to reconciliation. It is impossible to have a nation-to-nation conversation unless all actors accept the legitimacy of each other’s voices.

This conversation has already been had at other levels, notably between Quebec and Canada. Quebec’s path within the federation has also been a difficult one. For centuries, many Francophone Quebecers chafed under a colonial system they refused to accept. The clash led to violence, the imposition of martial law, the election of a separatist government, the holding of two referendums on sovereignty, and decades of bitter debate over language laws and the rights of Quebec’s anglophone minority.

This July 1, we are all free to observe Canada Day, or not, in the manner of our choosing. It can be a day of celebration, of hope, of thanks, of family. It can be a moment of reflection, of remembrance, of sorrow. It can be a vow to take the best of the past and move forward into the future. It can be a day of reconciliation. But one thing it should not be, is cancelled.
