Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, the minister said students who do not feel well on the day of their exam should not come to the examination centre.
"About 40,000 students have opted to take five or more of the written subjects so I think really results like that are testament to the very positive and good decision to give that an opportunity for students to avail of the accredited grades, the written exams or indeed a combination of both." She added that "this has been a particularly challenging 18 months for the class of 2021".
The minister said that schools have operated very successfully throughout the pandemic and it is hoped that they will move further towards normality from September. Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, he said it is "crucial" that all measures are taken to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19. Public Health Mid West has already said it is aware of a small number of students who will not now be able to sit their exams because of contracting Covid, or being identified as a close contact of an infected person.
