The Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, yesterday, commissioned the rebuilt Government Secondary School in Chibok Local Council, Borno State. On the night of April 14, 2014, Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, kidnapped 276 mostly Christian female students from the Government Girls Secondary School at Chibok. The girls were writing their Ordinary Level examinations.
While opening the school for academic activities, the minister said: “One hundred and twelve girls are still in captivity of Boko Haram,” assuring that the Federal Government was making efforts to release them. Education of girls, she added, is key to the development of the society.“I am calling on parents and community leaders to allow girls complete their education before marrying them out,” she said. According her, education of the girl is for the betterment of society and local economy.
Governor Babagana Zulum has declared that insurgency would not deter his government from reconstructing and remodelling schools to resume academic activities. Tallen added that 1,000 teachers had been employed, while the families of 15 slain teachers would be supported with means of livelihood. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mohammed Abacha, said “the commissioned remodelled school has 45 blocks of classrooms, library, laboratories dinning hall, administration, staff quarters and perimeter fencing.”
