Following the discovery of the remains of 215 children buried at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C., one of the institution’s survivors shares his memories of schoolmates disappearing and never being seen again during his time there.

The graves were uncovered on the property of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C. after a preliminary survey of the lands was ordered.“When I arrived, I was taken back. I was shocked,” Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir, told CTV News on Friday.“When it was shared with me that these were children, our children, from our community...It was devastating,” she added.

And the Canadian government knew about the deaths in residential schools but did nothing to stop it, she added. Infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, neglect, child abuse and malnourishment were some of the main causes of death for Indigenous children in residential schools, she said. Many of those who survived did so with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

He said that hearing the news of the discovered remains yesterday made him realize how far he’s come since his days there as a young boy. But there’s more work to be done for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. One thing that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been pushing for has been for an apology from the Pope for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools.

Some of the stories that have come out of there, are really Gut Wrenching. I'll bet that I'll be starting something, by saying 'Your Catholic Church, Not at its finest '!😖

We need a day of Remembrance for the Great Expulsion of 1700 East Coast Canada by the historical British government. That was Canada's first genocide of Indigenous, French, and Caribbean Canadians and what started this all in motion.

Diane05363872 I can't even fathom this 😞

So very sad, unfortunate & senseless indeed. This was genocide? Sincere condolences to family & friends who have lost loved ones ... 😔 🌈

battisctv Another government requested report in 2015, that cost so much money, with recommendations not acted upon. There were reasons for these reports! I’m so fed up with all the inaction and negligence 😡😡. Why bother? Oh yeah right… optics. Makes Govts look like they care.

Shut up and move along, there is nothing to see here. It's only a normal White people habit of eliminating the Indigenous people. It's nothing new.
