Almost every new public high school for the last couple of decades has branded itself a college — but what's behind this growing trend and does it make a difference?

Would a 'primary college' draw your eye?

Dianella Secondary College principal Wayne Austin says it was a tough decision to re-brand after 50 years. Dianella Primary College principal Anthony Middleton says he was keen for his school to align with the co-located Dianella Secondary College. Mr Middleton said while the name change clearly came at a financial cost — there were changes in marketing, web pages, stationery, signage — it was 'not exorbitant', and the payoff had been worthwhile.

University of Western Australia associate professor of marketing Sanjit Roy said the word 'college' conveyed something special to potential students and parents – and a name change could help schools stand out. Champion Bay made the switch when it expanded to include Years 7 to 12, while Geraldton re-branded as Year 7s started at the school for the first time.

"In the long run, from a marketing perspective, I think it's actually quite clever, because they're differentiating themselves as a result," she said. Many students at Dianella Secondary College say the name change has shaken up outsiders' perspectives on their school and opened up new doors.

Pity the Education of children dosen't improve, while we as a Nation slips down and down the World Ladder.

Further Americanisation of Australia.

Slow down. Let kids be kids.

Reviewing teaching and learning is a given and ongoing regardless of being a high school or college. A bit of a beat up for me. I think this is more about principal ego and status than anything else.
