Sports, military could benefit from ACL-injury drug trial

ACL injuries involve a tear or sprain of the ligament connecting the thigh bone to the shinbone, and they're most commonly caused by sudden stops or changes in direction. "After they do the surgery, you would inject this solution into the area that has been repaired and it changes the genetic landscape of that area to promote healing," JCU's Professor Geoffrey Dobson said.

The injury is a significant problem for armed forces personnel, who are 10 times more likely to sustain an ACL tear or rupture than civilians. “We’ve been working with the US military to develop it for haemorrhagic shock and traumatic brain injury and what we noticed was this ability of the drug to create this permissive healing environment," Professor Dobson said."Then our next step was to look at it in knee surgery and ACL reconstruction because that’s a major gap in military medicine,” said Professor Dobson.
