A man considered by millions of Venezuelans the “doctor of the poor” is set to be beatified, a step toward sainthood.

Venezuelan artist Miguel Garcia puts on the finishing touches on his mural of Venezuelan popular saint, Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, in Caracas, Venezuela, Monday, April 26, 2021. Known as the doctor of the poor, Hernandez is set to be beatified by the Catholic church, a step towards sainthood, on April 30th.

Initial plans called for a ceremony at a stadium, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced organizers to change venues, limit attendance to fewer than 300 people — mostly priests and nuns — and leave the rest of the Venezuelans to watch the event on television. The pared-down event will take place in a small chapel at a Catholic school on the edge of a mountainous national park north of Caracas.

Vargas has an image of the doctor on an altar in her home that is always illuminated with green light bulbs except during the blackouts that plague the country. “He believed that medicine was a priesthood of human pain,” Luis Razetti, a prominent Venezuelan doctor and friend of Hernández, once said.

Julia Crotta needs same recognition. Our own Anerican saint from CT.

This virus is trying to complicate this great day for the beatification of S.Hernandez (for me he is already Saint) but the People is the God’s Voice; it will be a straordinary day. We pray also for all Doctors that lost their lifes in the hospitais because of the chinese virus!

Papa Doc?

Aka pedo in citizen for the 1% circle...

Beatification means sainthood. Where's the disconnect?

What is “beatified”?

Well that makes perfect sense. Doctoring to people who can't pay you for it is definitely in the 'Jesus would absolutely approve' category. Seems pretty saintly to me.

That sounds very cultish.

I would have used the term 'venerate' instead of 'worship' so as to not confuse the protestants. Still Very Cool though.

Venezuela's beloved 'doctor of the poor' to be beatifiedCARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — With the austerity of a monk, a vocation to seek the good of others and a bright scientific mind, Jose Gregorio Hernández won the affection of those who called him “the doctor of the poor.” He became a religious icon after his death in 1919, and since then millions of Venezuelans have fervently asked that he be universally reverenced. Now, the doctor, scientist, university professor and pioneer of bacteriology will be beatified, a step toward sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. The beatification ceremony Friday will culminate 72 years of efforts by Venezuela's Catholics. Initial plans called for a ceremony at a stadium, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced organizers to change venues, limit attendance to fewer than 300 people — mostly priests and nuns — and leave most Venezuelans to watch the event on television. The pared-down event will take place in a small chapel at a Catholic school on the edge of a mountainous national park north of Caracas. What’s cool is that thanks to socialism, every Venezuelan doctor is now a “doctor of the poor”. Yikes they really could have used him at the tail end of influenza there too.
