China, the world’s biggest emitter of CO2, said Tuesday it plans to cut down on its use of coal Tuesday despite pressing ahead with plans to build new power plants driven by it, a move that forms part of Beijing’s wider plans to tackle climate change that last week saw President Xi Jinping commit to collaborating with the U.S. in reducing emissions.

In the future, coal will no longer be the main source of China’s power, said Li Gao, the director general of the Department of Climate Change in China’s Environment Ministry, the APWhile China will still need to use coal for its energy needs, Li told the press conference it will not be developed widely and will be “strictly regulated.
