Coronavirus cases in India are surging faster than anywhere in the world. Post-graduate medical students are the bulwark of the nation's virus response. One medical student at a government-run hospital in New Delhi said: “We’re cannon fodder, that’s all.”

An exhausted municipal worker rests after bringing the body of a person who died of COVID-19 for burial in Gauhati, India, Sunday, April 25, 2021. As India suffers a bigger, more infectious second wave with a caseload of more than 300,000 new cases a day, the country’s healthcare workers are bearing the brunt of the disaster.

The challenges facing India today, as cases rise faster than anywhere else in the world, are being compounded by the fragility of its health system and its doctors. “I get that senior doctors are older and more susceptible to the virus. But as we have seen in this wave, the virus affects old and young alike,” said Tara, who suffers from asthma but has been doing regular COVID-19 duty.

Dr. Rakesh Dogra, senior specialist at Hindu Rao, said the brunt of coronavirus care inevitably falls on postgraduate students. But he stressed they have different roles, with postgraduate students treating patients and senior doctors supervising.Although Hindu Rao hasn’t hired any additional doctors during the second wave, Dogra said doctors from nearby municipal hospitals were temporarily posted there to help with the increased workload.

Belatedly, the administration at Sassoon Hospital said last Wednesday it would hire 66 doctors to bolster capacity, and this month increased COVID-19 beds from 525 to 700. To handle the deluge, students at Sassoon said authorities had weakened rules meant to keep them and patients safe. For instance, students work with COVID-19 patients one week and then go straight to working with patients in the general ward.

Literally the medical staff are cannon fodder in india right now, God help them. India have death curve due to poverty, corruption and mechanism of health system.

This is a humanitarian catastrophe of immense proportions, I just cannot see the outcome, thought I had the answers but was wrong, don’t believe the figures whatsoever, my view. Is there’s 500, 000 new cases daily and maybe 10,000 deaths, but what going to stop the spread

Heartbreaking.... I know nurses who are falling apart right now.... 😢😢😢

From experience I can tell you that anyone who works for anyone else is cannon fodder.

God save India🙏

From the looks of one hospital interior, I'd have to agree. Crammed full of covid patients and not a sign of PPE anywhere for the poor doctors and nurses..literally jammed INSIDE with dozens of cavid patients. They're a going to get sick. Terrible

The US is a key nation (in red) blocking India's call for the dropping of vaccine patents so the developing world can help protect their people. But the US is about profits, not humanity... Oh and Bill Gates is opposing dropping patents. Of course..

Just get the vaccine. It will be ok. They are trying to save your life unlike some. Like Trump. He got staye of the art meds that we would have never gotten. He could have been one of his 500000
