Mayela Dayeh says she had no sex education at school and when she got her first period she had no idea what it was. New research shows the stigma around menstrual health in teenage girls is preventing some young Australians from going to school.

Mayela Dayeh remembers feeling "scared" and "unprepared" the first time she got her period at school. She didn't know what was happening to her body or where to get answers."At the time, I had no sex education … on my first day of getting it I had no idea of what it was," she said.New research shows the stigma around menstrual health in teenage girls is preventing some young Australians from going to school.

Forty per cent also said their school does not currently provide information about menstruation, while 49 per cent said they do not currently receive information about menstrual products, according to the research by feminine hygiene company Kimberly Clark. University of Sydney lecturer in global health Erin Hunter was a key contributor to a UNICEF guide developed to address the menstrual needs of girls.

"While anecdotal stories and opt-in online surveys have been effective at starting conversations, we need to fund research that can provide robust estimates of the extent of these issues and how menstrual experiences impact girls' wellbeing, health, and participation," she said. For Mayela, addressing the "shame" around menstruation and the "lack of education" could address a deepening gender divide.

Biology should be part of the normal curriculum Maybe it can be fit in next to the Coal Mining classes.

Where are the parents - especially the mother - in all this?

How the fuck is this news abc ?

What were those parents doing?

Breaking news, huh?

‘Let’s string some random crap about periods together and call it an article. For teh clicks.’ ‘Duuuh ok.’

Ummm parenting fail if the girl gets to 13 and doesn’t have this info. Not school fail.

Maybe she should sue her parents ffs?

Kids need to keep reading Judy Blume, that was how we all learned in grade 4 😂

That is on the Mum.

Wtf were her parents doing what a complete parenting failure and then expecting the school to educate on something the parents should have done in primary school.

There something not newsworthy we could have gone the rest of the day without hearing about.

News by the where are we at ffs gagorocks next article will b abt saracino_gino win /loss ratio watching live Carlton games

Slow news day? ThisisNotJournalism

Her parents are the problem, not society.

Did they belatedly enlighten her?

So isn’t that the mothers fault have the talk and prepare the young lady god help me

Roughly half the world's population will experience menstruation. People need to get over the stigma and just educate both boys and girls. It's not exactly like they held back teaching us that boys will get stiffies!

Do we need something like that as news?

And: what utter rubbish that in the age of social media 17-year-olds 'don't know' what menstruation is.

I'm guessing this was a private/religious school? I had a solid sex education in public school beginning in third grade in 1990, when I was eight. Choose conservative/private schools - receive a useless education.

Parents to blame here.

I’m surprised by this- most parents would have had chats with their girls or the girls. It is the responsibility of parents. Even my mum in Singapore prepared me when I was 9 and that was in the 1960s!!!! It was not taboo. It was part of life& normal. It was not a curse either.

Oh! How newsworthy not It shows the Level of incompetence of her parents not preparing the Girl. Can we have some real news reports? Or is it beyond your capability
