PETALING JAYA: Measures are underway to stem the rising number of Covid-19 clusters at educational institutions, the Health Ministry says.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said last year, 8,369 Covid-19 cases were detected among students aged 12 and below. However, there have been 23,779 cases among pre-teens this year alone.

According to ministry data, the number of clusters in educational institutions has increased by 83%. It began with 12 clusters in the epidemiological week 15 to 22 in week 16 .“These include fever, sore throat, cough, loss of one’s sense of taste and smell, ” he said. As for students in dormitories, Dr Adham said his ministry would discuss with the Education and Higher Education ministries to test those with Covid-19 symptoms, and to carry out contact tracing quickly.Education Ministry staff members and teachers who displayed Covid-19 symptoms should inform the district health office to obtain exemption from attending school, Dr Adham said.
