Foreign Minister Marise Payne has defended the Morrison government’s decision to axe Victoria’s Belt and Road agreement with China on 2GB radio this morning. “It is about prioritising Australia’s national interests and ensuring that there’s consistency across our foreign relations,” she said.
On Wednesday the Commonwealth used its sweeping new veto laws introduced last year to scrap four deals between Victorian authorities and other countries. Two involve the state's controversial Belt and Road infrastructure initiative and the other two were education deals struck with Iran and Syria. Speaking this morning Victoria Employment Minister Jaala Pulford said the decision would not impact any of the state’s major construction plans.
