How Students Are Making Change With Campus Sexual Assault Laws

Their student-written laws touch on five core protections they believe all students should have access to, including free medical and legal support services; amnesty policies that prevent survivors and bystanders from being punished for breaking school codes of conduct at the time of an incident ; confidential advising services for survivors; public data through campus climate surveys on sexual violence; and annual prevention and response training for all students and employees.

The student and young alumni leaders at EVC also talk about the transformative experience of finding their voices as activists. “[At The Every Voice Coalition] I am able to transform trauma into change alongside so many fierce advocates and organizers,” Gallo shared. Acknowledging that wellness, self-care and community are vital to their work of creating change through legislation, EVC provides a preliminary lesson for all volunteers on trauma-informed care and wellness practices. “Prioritizing our team’s well-being allows for an open, respectful and sustainable environment to which students, survivors and alumni may always return,” according to EVC communications director Bella T. Fong.
