The Minister for Education has defended the Government decision to change the vaccine roll-out schedule from an occupation-based one to one led by age, saying it was 'not a value judgment on any given profession'

The unions say the motion will mandate them to explore any and all options, up to and including industrial action. The annual conferences of the country's three teacher trade unions are under way online.

She called for a reduction in class sizes "to give our pupils equal opportunity with their European counterparts" and said the integration of ICT in education should be accelerated to build a stronger education system. She said the "new normal must make education the bedrock of our society and fund it, on par with our European neighbours".

Chair of the ASTI Education Committee Edel Farrell said teachers witnessed a high level of disengagement during the time the schools were closed and that undoubtedly the pandemic has had a negative impact on students. He said it is important to engage with frontline workers, teachers, gardaí and "also people who work in supermarkets and people who have been working on the frontline right throughout the pandemic."Teachers reacted with dismay and anger to last week's vaccine decision.

He said that it would be very simple to roll-out a twin-track approach and vaccinate key workers like teachers, gardaí and retail workers while also vaccinating the rest of the population.

Genuine question .... Is there any data out there on the number of people in their 80's that received a vaccine ( any reason ) in the last 5 years that are still alive today ?

Teachers ,and rightly so, are collecting oil drums and getting ready to go for a walk. And I hope the public get fully behind them

Rightly so teachers are going on holidays end of May get in the queue like the rest of us....! No sympathy for teachers at all.....

So she doesn't care whether teacher's GET covid as long as they don't take up a hospital bed or die.

Great to hear now let’s get on with it . The teachers have got enough air time. They’ll be on their summer holidays soon . Prioritize the elderly and stop those Unions holding our country to ransom .

This would not be the opinion of the rest of Europe who have prioritized Teachers and Irish Teachers have even more unique working conditions in jam-packed old buildings... This Government do nt give a shit on top of being incompetent

Decisions based in scientific evidence in one instance and then ignored in another 🙄.

Who said it was a value judgement? If MichealMartinTD wants to ensure schools stay open and break trains of transmission he needs to vaccinate education staff as a discrete cohort ahead of the general population.

As Covid deaths are overwhelmingly effecting those over the age of 50 it would seem the right thing to do.

All the ministers are just puppets on a string being pulled by Failing Martin ...Corrupt Varadkar...and Evil Coveney... The most corrupt government ever in our history.

Copying the successful Uk rollout

👍well done!
