New school-based traineeship program opening doors for NSW students | AnnaPattySMH

Oscar Knight and Jye Boehme are among students getting a taste of different trades as part of a new school-based traineeship pilot program to be rolled out across NSW.

Year 12 South Grafton High School student Oscar Knight is among 10 students doing a Certificate II Construction Pathways school-based traineeship with GJ Gardner Homes. He is one of 10 students from his school and South Grafton High doing a school-based traineeship with GJ Gardner. So far he has worked with a carpenter, a plasterer and a concreter.

Micah Middelbosch, managing director at GJ Gardner, said the traineeship allowed students to sample plumbing, bricklaying, electrical work, carpentry, painting, plastering and tiling. The students spend at least one day a week on the job for 144 days in year 11 and year 12 and a day learning theory towards a TAFE Certificate II in construction pathways. The students also get paid for their days on a worksite.

AnnaPattySMH A good story by Anna, but what is foundational to the success of this is qualified technology teachers. The shortage is becoming an emergency.
