Schools’ safety and government’s self-defeat

. It was shocking to her the minister say such. This is self-defeat. Nwajiuba also claimed that almost all schools in the country were “fenced.”

Whether a school is fenced or not, the fact is that our schools need security. Certainly not the kind of ‘security’ provided by community volunteers armed with sticks against AK-47-carrying bandits. The minister also stated that perimeter fencing by communities is not effective. To him, security consciousness is the thing. “If you hear where some of them are being held, you will know that it is a question of self-consciousness and communities informing officials on time”, he was further reported to have said. The statement is pathetic. It’s an affirmation of self-defeat for any government to say it cannot secure all schools.

In Kankara, Kagara, Jangebe, Birnin Gwari, students and teachers were chased by bandits. These bandits request for ransom, shoot videos of students in a very terrible situation and yet the only thing the government could do is negotiate and pay ransoms. What is the use of our security forces? It will be most unfortunate if the government cannot secure and safeguard the places where students are expected to study and interact.

The late General Sani Abacha was once quoted to have said that “If insurgency lasts for more than 24 hours in a country, the government has a hand in it”. I suggest the government adopt the strategy of the man in Kaduna: declare an all-out war with the bandits. The federal government should follow the necessary but not necessarily due process to end the scourge so that our schools will be free and the nation better able to protect its future leaders.
