At a Politico Playbook event on Thursday, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain indicated that Biden has asked newly-appointed Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to put together a memo outlining potential legal authorities that would allow him to enact broad student loan cancellation of up to $50,000.
Separately, last month President Biden also directed the Department of Justice to evaluate his authority to enact widespread student loan forgiveness. Student loan borrower activists, advocacy organizations, and Democratic lawmakers have been mounting an ongoing pressure campaign for months to convince President Biden to cancel student debt through executive action. Earlier this year, Rep. Ayanna Pressley , along with several other progressive House Democrats, introduced a resolution calling on Biden to cancel $50,000 in federal student loan debt for every borrower using executive authority.
Biden has expressed support for broad student loan forgiveness, but he has repeatedly said that he would prefer that Congress enact student debt cancellation through legislation, rather than acting unilaterally via an executive order. That might prove difficult, however, as it is unclear that a majority of Democrats in either the House or the Senate would approve such a measure, or whether Senate Democrats would be able to avoid or overcome an expected filibuster by Senate Republicans.

Bad move. In doing so, we promote irresponsibility: contracts become meaningless. Borrowers must repay their “obligations”. Provide a means to “renegotiate” the terms. Make the loan terms “reasonable”. I did not sign the contract!
Placing ppl in debt is America number one value. You got to pay up to live here. No one will tell you , unless you know how systems operate. Universities and the White House and Banks know what they are doing ... system to keep the money moving 🧐

In my country we have very good universities and they are free. In US system is weird and if will be canceled it is not fair for all who already paid for. It could be a huge help for loaner to take out of intrest rates.

These headlines are ridiculous because they imply the forgiveness will be universal or broad. No, this will be extremely narrow, and only applies to people who can prove they were coerced into applying for the loans.
