A rare Amazonian cactus has flowered after weeks of suspense for thousands of people watching around the world.is believed to be the first time a flower of its kind has bloomed in the UK.
The event attracted interest from around the globe with 200,000 people watching the university's livestream in the past fortnight.On Saturday the plant, which was believed to be nocturnal as its name suggests, began to open.Scientists at the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens have been nurturing the rare cactus for six years.
"We've been totally overwhelmed by the interest our flower has created," CUBG director Beverley Glover said."As scientists, botanists and horticulturalists here at the Garden, we are all fascinated by plants, but its been so heartwarming to see how our Moonflower has captured the hearts and interest of so many people across the globe."opened up for just 12 hours, and researchers hope it will now bloom every year.
