ANALYSIS: Facebook took down all of Australia's news content – and all my work went with it

A thousand questions ran through my mind when I learned of Facebook's news restrictions.

It hit me on my way to work that my beloved student journalism group, UOWTV, might also have fallen victim. In my experience, the best way to make a name as a student journalist has been via social media, particularly Facebook.

Wow, no mention of the fact that Government has passed 'unworkable' (Labor's term) legislation through the House. This would be a more impactful story if it highlighted how badly the Government has handled this and the impact to Australian citizens of the mess that's created.

Curious as to why they rely on FB as their only source of info on the ban if they are students of journalism? Surely they are learning about using multiple sources to gain information for study & career?

I run a small news and information site. I employ 2 people. Get around 2k hits a day. can I get $? Of course not....only Rupert! The liberal govt is so corrupt

All your work? Saved on FB? sure.....

So tired of Facebook dominance, poor journalism and news articles written to encourage click baits. I hope there is a shift to better fund journalism by going directly to the publishers for quality content.

Zuckerberg should step down as CEO and Ower of Facebook we dont need reactionaries from the past!!!!

DeleteFacebook

Should’ve saved a backup 🤷‍♂️

My hat goes off to Facebook today for standing up against our Government's blackmail. An attempt at lining Murdoch's pockets once again. FB is a private company and are the one sending traffic and keeping the news organisations alive, not the other way around.

It was Government

China ban the wines Facebook ban the news.

Who in their right mind would use Facebook as a storage cloud to file 'all' of their work?😂

Hmmm, did you not 'back up' anything?

Good riddance to facebook, wish they would piss off altogether. All the fuss the media making only strengthens Zukkerberg position.

Eggs, meet basket

People’s reliance on Facebook is terrifying.

Yep, all the 'news' content - like ABC, Britannica , mashable and TheOnion, because it's their business not a government ATM. Maybe our pollies should do some actual work if they want to save our economy instead of forcing people to fuck us off eh?

Blame LNP for doing News Corpse bidding...

Looking forward to sth new like Koalabook, Kangaroobook, etc 🤣p/s: I’ve deleted my Facebook& LinkedIn accounts for a year. Couldn’t be happier. P/s2: Any companies require a job applicant to have a LinkedIn account should be punished! It’d be against their willingness.

Great 👍

Who the hell uses FB for their News. Seriously.

Sorry about impact on any local business but not in news Corp et al.

the Australian government took it down by trying to force Facebook to pay for your work!!

And?

You are the product, Maddie

It’s not about journalism, this was about revenue. This was about the fact that the Govt of Australia is owned by Rupert Murdoch. 70% of media ownership is in Murdochs hands.

PM Morrison is condemning Facebook for blocking information. This is the man who has blocked countless Australians from reading his tweets and Facebook posts. Seemingly unchallenged by most in the media.

Aww! Poor Maddie. Welcome to the real world where privately owned services do what they want not what you seem to think you are entitled to. The world doesn't revolve around yours or anyone elses agenda. If your lot are so tech savvy wouldn't you have backed up your stuff

Facebook adhere to government legislation, or face heavy fines. There, fixed it for you.

In shock news today I discovered a lot of people still use Facebook, and more specifically, for news! 😂

If you believe Facebook is your only viable option. Make a new one. It is allowing a Coles Woolworths attitude to occur.

They'll block news content but livestream a massacre or suicide no problem

'To see it as a blank page today took an emotional toll.' Geez that must be tough.

Got along without you before I met you I’m going to get along without you now. And I did.

Siri, Define irony ...

Aussie deserves it. The lackey is useless when the master is weak. Morrison can suck the ball of Joe even harder for 'papa pls love me again'

Very sorry to hear this!

This is because the media code is unworkable. Fire announcements, health announcements and the like are all regarded as news and the media code requires that FB and Google pay for this info to be on their platforms. The code does not distinguish what is news.

Sorry to hear that. If you have backups, consider posting onto Patreon.

It’s a private company they can do what they like.

Lol eat shit

I honestly don't know why this is news. We all saw it coming. Government wanted money for news shared of their government funded news organizations. Defund news organizations and let said news organizations negotiate new terms.

Everyone at the cheered when Twitter banned trump but it's suddenly not fair when they get banned just remember that Facebook is a private company and can ban whoever they want

Facebook stopped giving you all a free ride. Losing all that click bait stuff suits me.

Get rekt

Now you know how Trump feels...

Maybe this will be a reminder to stop acting as if a privately owned service is public infrastructure. Be it Facebook, TikTok, Reddit .. anything .. you are basically sticking postcards on a supermarket noticeboard. The fact the ABC doesn't seem to know this is.. scary.

Why should Facebook pay to prop up lazy Australian media companies, who’ve had 25 years to prepare - and done nothing. This isn’t the little guy fighting back, it’s the government trying to give their mates a goldmine. ScottMorrisonMP acccgovau

My understanding is FB didn’t “take anything down”...it just blocked access to Aus accounts?

Thank Joshie and Scotty From Marketing - Facebook was not going to bent over to pay the Murdoch tax

Talk to your local member ... he’s probably not LNP

Just change IP and post international news on Australia. Same stories, it's 2021. As for news outlets, buying a server in another country is easy peasy.

Facebook is primarily a data harvesting app: users are the product, not the customer. If governments tried to track people the way big tech does (like with a contact tracing app) there’d be riots. Also, it’s passé—whose kids have a Facebook account? Adapt, move on.

I've been getting round it by linking to the twitter posts of news sources.

Who uses FB these days anyway!? Deleted it ages ago and surprisingly, life still goes on :)))
