Pablo Hasel barricaded himself with dozens of his supporters inside a university as he sought to overturn a 9-month prison sentence for insulting the monarchy and praising terrorism.

A 24-hour standoff between police and a rapper barricaded with dozens of his supporters in a university ended Tuesday with anti-riot officers arresting the artist.

It was the rapper's latest effort to resist imprisonment and draw attention to what he portrays as a campaign for free speech. The rapper has been sentenced to 9 months in prison for insulting the monarchy and praising terrorism. The case of Hasél, whose real name is Pablo Rivadulla Duró, has drawn increasing attention in Spain and has been linked to the government’s sudden announcement that it is changing a national law that is deemed to curtail freedom of expression.

Convicted Spanish Rapper in Prominent 'Gag Law' Case ArrestedPablo Hasél barricaded himself with dozens of his supporters inside a university as he sought to overturn a 9-month prison sentence for insulting the monarchy and praising terrorism the thing is he's not insulting the monarchy at all. While he's in prison, the former king fled to Abu Dhabi. The lyrics of his song turned out to be true (not that anyone doubted it tho) Nobody goes to jail for insulting the monarchy. Insults against honor carry fines, no prison. He has been convicted of apology for terrorism and physical assault.
