Canberrans with Down syndrome celebrate their little victories

Christian Perryman has appeared on a children's TV show, Tessa McGuire has landed her first job, and Lauren Murray has been appointed to sit on an important board.

Nine-year-old Christian Perryman, who attends a mainstream school in Canberra, has been recognised for appearing on ABC children's program Giggle and Hoot as Pirate Christian. The appearance dazzled his peers and helped him and his mother have conversations with other students about Down syndrome — a chromosomal condition that affects an estimated 15,000 Australians."I thought at year three it was an appropriate age for the kids to understand a little bit more about Down syndrome.

"Those achievements can be something as simple as learning to tie your own shoelaces, getting yourself to school on the bus, maybe getting a job," she said.
