With more school districts around the country requiring students to keep cameras on during remote learning, many kids and parents are feeling relief and educators are seeing positive results in grades and participation

Rachel Anderson’s fourth-grade daughter was so anxious about being on camera during remote learning that she cried every day for the first six weeks of school.

Districts were hesitant to make cameras a requirement in the fall, out of respect for family privacy. Besides increasing anxiety for some kids, the live look into students’ living quarters—not only by teachers, but also by fellow students—might pose equity issues. While some families have opposed camera requirements, many others say it has brought relief from the daily battle to get their kids to engage with their teachers and classmates. In Charlotte’s case, there is no requirement.

As of October, more than 75% of schools and districts that provide live remote instruction required students to turn on their cameras, according to a. That number is even higher now, as many more districts around the country, including my family’s in Southern California, have implemented cameras-on policies in recent weeks.

While teachers said it is difficult to teach to a blank screen, Mr. Howland said the decision was driven by parents. They were having trouble holding their kids accountable all day long. “We were getting emails from parents saying, ‘Please make them turn their cameras on.’ ”
