Penelope Smith, the principal and teacher at the tiny Natone Primary School, is a big believer in the advantages of small schools. But despite their many fans, are they worth the cost?

A push in 2011 to close many small schools was averted, in part due to the Save Our Schools campaign

"You can do that in a larger class but in a smaller class you have a bit more time to spend on that."Natalie Brown, the director at the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment, agreed there were advantages to small schools. Independent economist Saul Eslake said it remained hard to prove whether the high running costs of small schools impacted the educational outcomes of students right across the system.

Collinsvale Primary School has just 52 children, among them this composite class of year two and three students.
