With President Biden vowing to get younger students back to the classroom by spring, some experts want the U.S. to refocus its COVID-19 testing system less on medical precision than on mass screening.

Jazmyn Finney is administered a coronavirus 15-minute rapid test at the student health center on campus at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021. As vaccinations slowly ramp up, some experts say turning to millions more rapid tests that are cheaper but technically less accurate may improve the chances of identifying sick people during the critical early days of infection, when they are most contagious.

“Within the span of a week, we had crushed the spread. If we had had to stick with the PCR test, we would have been dead in the water,” said Dr. Robert Doolittle, referring to the polymerase chain reaction test that is considered the gold standard by many doctors and Food and Drug Administration regulators.by spring and the country’s testing system still unable to keep pace with the spread of COVID-19, some experts see an opportunity to refocus U.S.

at the FDA, which has greenlighted more than 230 PCR tests but only about a dozen rapid tests. Priced as low as $5, the quick tests look for viral proteins, which are generally considered a less rigorous measure of infection. The FDA said in a statement it supports “innovation in testing” and “has not hesitated” to make rapid tests available.still incapable

But many lab specialists worry about vastly expanding the use of rapid tests, which are more prone to false results, and have never been used at the massive scale being proposed. “I want to believe in people making good decisions when left to their own devices,” said Butler-Wu. “But the fact that we are where we are right now really shows you people don’t make good decisions when left to their own devices.”

Biden’s team has been in discussions with the nonprofit Rockefeller Foundation, which has outlined a plan to use 300 million tests per month to return most U.S. students to the classroom beginning in March.in six city school systems give an early glimpse of the potential opportunity and pitfalls.

Bill Gates said last year that slow pcr are garbage, but few listened resulting in more deaths. Its not a public health screening tool. Good media's finally catching up, but in 100 days we'll see if this admin make same mistakes. We need rapid tests. Now.

autismepi Preventing infections is the ethical thing to do and should be the national priority. Tests don’t prevent infections. People need to educate themselves on this point and decide how to protect themselves and their families and their schools. Everything is at stake.

Nobody knows if a vaccinated person will have no symptoms, not get a test, and unknowingly spread virus to the unvaccinated. Slow rollout & no vaccine approved for kids & teenagers. Even more of a reason for rapid, non invasive daily testing

Hopefully these rapid tests are saliva tests/spit tests. Up the nose is harder to convince people to do every day until we reach ZeroCovid

A diabetic has to test his or her blood sugar levels every day. If they don't, there might be more problems. Let's all test for covid everyday to minimise time wasting disruption. We can achieve zerocovid & at that point everyone just keep the tester ready for the next outbreak

Everyone should test as routine before brushing teeth everyday until zerocovid. Results sent by app to health authorities. Can gov incentivise people to do this sort of daily testing eg cheaper transport for the more COVID safe people who test every day or tax deductions etc?

Rapid tests everywhere. Some or all positives to follow up with pcr if rapid tests don't show all data eg genomic sequencing, contact tracing, info about variants/mutations

Also, targeted wastewater testing should occur in all places with lots of people eg schools, dorms, nursing homes, malls, airports, workplaces etc. If covid shows up, pcr or rapid test everyone there at that day/time. This will help too

Even if these rapid tests were quite inaccurate (they're not), the herd effects from widespread frequent testing could still end the pandemic in weeks:

Just to make it clear: it doesn't matter if the tests are 99% or 80% sensitive, if either 99% or 80% of the contagious people is isolated and the numbers decrease by 99% or 80%, that is a BIG deal either way.

Yes. The right tool for the right use.

Of all the Men I’ve heard demanding that schoolhouse doors be thrown open, not a single one has ever taught a classroom full of children or tried to run a school.

Most Americans don’t want the government to pit one race against another. But that's what Democrats are good at. Their political strategy is mainly pitting one race against another, and stoking racial division — The Dems bring race into every subject every chance they get.

Anal swabs are your future.

Stop mass testing and the problem goes away.

The rapid tests are garbage.

No offence but hasn’t POTUS brought it down ? Just if these conspiracy theories are left to rest we can do more. Wear a mask social distance. It’s not a fucking hoax you dumb GOP this is real. You republicans not having a plan at least costed 100,000 lives

Innovate for what is needed. Not for getting back for the sake of because. That’s how we do this. Logistics matter. Technology matters. Resources and services matter. Behinds in seats are just that. Every single school has different needs, teachers, students and families.

What an odd way to say 'we know the tests aren't reliable but we're going to do them anyway so we can force kids back to school & parents back to work just as American Covid deaths reach 470,000'. 😷

So like china where 1 out of nine work.this doesn't even make sense.

Extremely unreliable
