PETALING JAYA: A university lecturer has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a drug syndicate, an offence which carries the death penalty.

Brickfields police chief Anuar Omar said the 31-year-old man, who works at a university in Selangor, was arrested yesterday. He had been involved in the syndicate for seven months. The lecturer was arrested after the district narcotics squad caught a 19-year-old man in Kuchai Maju, Kuala Lumpur, and confiscated 16.65gm of the drug Ecstasy.

Anuar said the man said he had obtained his supply through an internet site and obtained ganja from the lecturer. Police seized 3.3gm of Ecstasy powder, 3.17gm of cannabis capsule, 1,380gm of marijuana and 1,380mcg of the psychedelic drug LSD.He said the case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the death penalty on conviction. The lecturer, who tested positive for cannabis, has been remanded for seven days.
