'These months of lost learning are devastating and will be felt for a lifetime'

Experts warn of damage caused to kids by school closures First published on Friday 29 January 2021 Last modified on Friday 29 January 2021

The study – from the Education Endowment Foundation and based on data collected by the National Foundation for Education Research – looked at the impact of the first national lockdown on six and seven-year-old children in Year 2. 'So we will work with parents, teachers and schools to develop a long-term plan to make sure pupils have the chance to make up their learning over the course of this parliament.'

The study looked at the performance of 5,900 children in reading and maths, and it was found to be significantly lower in autumn 2020 than in 2017, with pupils making, on average, two months less progress in both subjects. With the schools likely to stay shut a good whole longer now, it seems unlikely things will have got much better, if at all.
