TV stardom usually takes baby steps, but 21-year-old Callum Scott Howells, from the former coal-mining village of Tonyrefail in the Rhondda Valley, has just leapfrogged over any need to show up with, say, a minor concussion on Casualty. He’s done so by landing the most talked-about role in the most talked-about TV show of the year so far – Russell T Davies’s gut-wrenching Channel 4 drama about the Aids crisis in the 1980s, It’s a Sin.
