Education think-tank says pupils should have the right to repeat the school year after Covid disruption.

Some areas have been affected worse than others by Covid cases, leading to varying access to education for pupils.

"The government needs to consider urgently how it will support these students and, in doing so, it should also look at whether they should be allowed to repeat the school year if it's in their best interest." Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: "We are interested in the EPI's idea of the right to repeat a year for students who have experienced extreme learning loss.

The EPI made the proposal in response to the DfE and Ofqual's consultation on how exams will be run this year.In early January, education secretary Gavin Williamson announced the cancellation of annual public exams, saying that grades would be awarded via teacher assessments instead.

EduPolicyInst it is not as easy as people think putting child back a year- due to their emotional well-being. And most children are that far behind anyway.

We were talking about this MGabgd4

Has anyone asked pupils what they think of this idea? In my experience few pupils view this as a palatable option.

All years should repeat - when schools finally do return they’re gonna have to re teach everything to ensure all students have had the same learning.

EduPolicyInst What a great idea this is. GavinWilliamson schoolsreopeninguk keepschoolsopen keepschoolsclosed

- Why not have ALL pupils repeat the year? Scrap the September intake and from now on primary school starts at age 5. Inconvenient for some but benefit to all in the long run.

The United Kingdom is already behind Australia and Ireland in the time children /young adults spend in education to the tune of three or four years. (Cornell university study). So repeating years should not be a problem.

Or you could just reopen the schools once again, sooner than later, and have the kids play catch-up.

YES!

Teachers unions are an absolute disgrace, we should look to disband this union who have let our great country down in our hour of need. They could of had a plan B, have 6 weeks hols or even half term after Christmas, same old BS. Been to uni and have an issue with the world.

I have a close relative who is a teacher. She said within her class, she has 4 groupings of children. Based on their learning capabilities. They are used to dealing with those who need extra attention. Our teachers are heroes. No one will be left behind!

Why not just have the school year be incorporated into the breaks schools would usually have so the kids don’t spend more time out of school and don’t have to then repeat a year for something that wasn’t their fault

Thats a good solution. For those who had fallen behind

Did they offer this back in WW2? Or did that generation come out okay? Were they different children somehow when they were taken from parents and sent to strangers? Them when they returnes did they not become docs, teachers, gov leader? Am I missing something

There should always be an option for pupils / students to repeat a year and try to improve their grade

Bit much? Rather than have them lose a year of their life, why not just invest in summer schooling so they're caught up and not left behind?

thanks
