Opinion: Higher education is a key tool for improving safety in prisons, and that’s more important now than ever

Stephen Sinclair is the secretary of the Washington State Department of Corrections.

We know firsthand that conditions inside our prisons improve when incarcerated people are also students and have a greater investment in their future. And we also know that people who have been able to take college courses are more productive and less likely to re-offend when they return to their communities. That’s why it’s more important than ever to increase access to higher education by reinstating Pell Grants for incarcerated people with low incomes.
