Students at the University of Limerick are being offered free Covid-19 tests before they travel home for the Christmas period.

The tests will be carried out by Public Health Mid-West. While they are open to all UL students they are especially targeted at students who are living in rented accommodation either on the college campus or nearby, and who will be leaving Limerick to spend the Christmas holiday with wider family in other parts of the country.

UL President Professor Kerstin Mey said the tests aim "to minimise any virus transmission by helping to identify asymptomatic carriers of Covid-19, particularly among students who intend to return home for the Christmas period". Dr Mai Mannix, Director of the Department of Public Health Mid-West, said she wanted to encourage students to get tested.
