Latest national figures show 12 coronavirus outbreaks recorded in schools last week

The principal added that no students would be disadvantaged due to the absent teachers, while it is envisaged that all Christmas exams will continue as planned.

The number of outbreaks in schools has been, broadly, on a downward trajectory since it peaked at 46 in the run-up to the October mid-term break. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre report says while school outbreaks indicate that at least two children or staff members had the virus, transmission of Covid-19 within the school was not necessarily established. For example, last week a total of 262 outbreaks were detected in family homes, while some 652 were recorded the previous week.

Many school principals have reported difficulties securing qualified cover for teachers who have been forced to self-isolate or are required to undergo testing.
