Police will guard high schools across New South Wales as the state government boosts security in anticipation of a third day of hoax threats and student evacuations.

Thousands of teens have been forced out of the classroom and HSC exams cancelled due to threatening emails to more than 30 high schools over the last two days.

The state's Police Minister David Elliott has condemned the hoax as cruel to Year 12 students who have already suffered a disrupted year. Police have been given the power to search exam halls and decide against evacuations if the threat is deemed fake. Just 10 regional schools south of Sydney and 20 Sydney high schools were evacuated yesterday.
