If it weren’t so serious, there would be deep comedy in seeing Marcus Rashford run rings around Boris Johnson’s lot, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

Will nobody think of the prime ministers? Everyone has a story of deprivation that has stuck with them during this pandemic, and mine is one of a selection offered by “friends” of Boris Johnson, who were so concerned about his household finances a month ago that they went to the Daily Mail about it.

don't ever buy or read it's the Lord Haw Haw of imperial governance that only pretends to be your friend - after the left wing horse has long bolted and been shot and the establishment feels safe again it will turn again when another left wing leader wins the ballot

Bringing up the Bullingdon Club (again)? Yeah, it worked so well at the election. Can't you think of anything else?

One has to question advisors, yes

Nobody can possibly be this stupid. The level of ineptitude displayed by this government simply has to be deliberate. I can't look at Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Patel, Coffey et al without thinking this has to be some kind of elaborate joke.

Johnson is touching his face in that cover photo. He's violating his own recommendations this time, not Cummings. HandsFaceSpace

Scotland's Government works to feed our children. England's Government has other priorities.

It's not even Christmas yet and the Government is already doing its Ebenezer Scrooge impersonation, 'Are there no charities?' Asked Scrooge. 'And the local authorities?' demanded Scrooge. 'Are they still in operation?'

Hopefully this wakes up the 'wanted to voted Labour but didn't like Corbyn' morons. But probably not.

And still be ahead in the polls.

The problem is that the vast majority in the country can see through the leftie MSM's attempts to make this an issue. Boris knows exactly where the true feelings lie, he and Cummings have a far better understanding of the electorate as a whole than ever the press will have.

Prove it

It was Heartwarming. Not many came with this type of idea before. The kids wont forget Rashford definitely. Johnson wants to keep all the fish fingers for himself. Why there is no more famous and wealthy wont contribute to this, it's another question. sad

Follow me Hills_Diaries and I follow back immediately. Unfollow me if I don't. 💞💞💞

Some miss open goals because of nerves, but Boris misses because he's always in the wrong place at the right time.

'Charles Manson was inspired by the Beatles.'

They've certainly made a meal of this sitter

School meals: How many children can claim free meals? The government is facing increased pressure to provide free school meals over the holidays. I remember a chap at my school who received free school meals, because his parents were divorced. He lived in a three bed semi with his mum and his Dad had a five bedroom detached house and drove a new Jag. Life is not always as it seems. “Why should my taxes go towards feeding vulnerable children” says people happy for their taxes to go towards paint jobs for Buckingham palace and private planes, repairing Big Ben and failed track and trace apps. Wrong question. The question should be, how many families that can claim free child meals actually need to? Most who can don't have hungry kids.

Government's own advisory committee urges it to extend free school mealsSocial mobility commission says ‘much more ambitious programme’ is needed on child poverty Thank you MarcusRashford leading from the front. Hope your mother is proud of you 💜💕💙❤️🤍🤎🧡 why didn't the govt consult with them before making their decision. Shouldn't this body be first point of call BEFORE taking action. Is Boris making his decisions without referring to his own advisory that's cowboy leadership firing from the hip and its dangerous The government have provided extra funding to local authorities specifically to support vulnerable families. They're already doing what people want them to do, but clearly this doesn't fit with the anti-Tory narrative being pushed by those riding the Rashford bandwagon.

Opinion: Can the government really not afford to pay for free school meals? Two questions need to be asked. One is whether this is the most cost-effective option. The other is whether this will lead to another free TV licence or triple lock pensions situation, writes Hamish McRae Can the Independent really be asking that question? They have to draw a line somewhere. To not pay for childrens meals while they are not at school (during holidays) is not unreasonable. ToryScum

People are trying to defend the Tories' free school meal policy and it's not going down wellIt’s been heartwarming, if a little bittersweet, to see restaurants rally around Marcus Rashford after the government voted against his campaign to extend free school meals over the half-term The indefensible cannot be defended ToryScumbags They forget to include the cost of condiments, the high cost of fresh vegetables & the time-poor workers who may have done a 12 hour shift in a factory or care home & are so exhausted that they maybe want to just cuddle their kids or help with homework instead.
