As leader of Newcastle City Council, I know the £63m hardship fund that Matt Hancock now claims was meant to feed pupils never had anything to do with free school meals

has been heroic – and so have the businesses, community groups and councils that have stepped in to fill the gap. We’ve seen local pubs and restaurants – themselves taking an absolute hammering from coronavirus – offering meals to those in need, we’ve seen some big businesses do their bit, and I’m proud to say we’ve seen Labour Councils across the country stand up for their communities too.

Opinion: it’s up to the parents to feed their own fucking kids.

£63m divided by 352 councils in England =£178,000 each approximately - this morning on BBC Breakfast Nahil Zawari said his council in Stratford received £500,000 of this in July while the council leader of Darlington said they'd received £125,000 .

Empty plates left outside Tory HQ after vote against extending free school mealsThe plates and posters had messages written on them including: ‘No child should go hungry’, ‘Tories for the few not the many’ and ‘lunch is not a luxury’. Anyone seen any of these hungry kids we're all so worked up over? I have to ask as I'm from an age before universal benefit and when poverty was real. Dont care! ~ The issue is Parents being able to provide for their children.
