Lawyer Stephen Franks says universities are hotbeds of cancel culture, where instead of engaging in debate, you “get the authorities to throw their weight around ostensibly to stop people from being offended”.

His comments come after a recent gagging order was placed on Canterbury University China expert Professor Anne-Marie Brady - whom Mr Franks represents - due to secret complaints from universities who claimed there were errors in her work. “Her university put a gag on her, told her she wasn’t allowed to talk about the proceeding,” Mr Franks said. “They justified it by reference to some privacy interests - hers - which she promptly waived, and some of the other individual complainants.

“Professor Brady is anxious not to give anyone an excuse to turn it from that matter of principle to whether as an employee she’s obliged to follow their orders even if they are an infringement on free speech. Mr Franks said he was unsure why her work was “said to involve arguments about academic freedom at all”.

An insult to the intelligence of the young with a thirst for knowledge. They cannot write their Honours, Masters or PhD thesis on the subjects of their choice without a leftist view. Many who are not in agreeance with ideological views remain silent to avoid being penalised.

When working hard to get your kids into uni is seen as the white privileged? Trump got it right when he said “universities are no longer run by patriots”

This is 100% true... many conservatives still left there are too afraid to speak up. Where is their right to free speech and opinions?

Not wrong........ we've bred a country of sensitive flowers haven't we.

It started decades ago. I remember a professor in my BofEd lectures trying to indoctrinate us to the left. I debated & she wasn’t impressed!
