You can put lipstick or diamonds on a Rolls Royce driving northerner; but it always remains a pig. Rule unchanged.

Chippy chippy chippy........go to Manchester poly then if Durham is too rah for you......

It happens the other way as well

Strange place Durham, gorgeous town and friendly locals with a load of obnoxious posh students thrown in. The locals & students appear to completely ignore eachother.

Coming from 2 miles from Durham City centre this is and always has been a problem in Durham. Upper middle class students always causing trouble with the locals. When they get a hiding the Uni always says it’s the locals fault. We hate them in Durham.

Try being a local ...

I deliver there , most of these students don’t even know the word thankyou jumped up little shits !

Joshoewaa Have you seen this?

No shit

This has long been the case. Students at my kid’s school were advised if you really want to go to Durham apply to hill colleges not town because of public school bullies.

Not even surprised. Durham University is full of Oxbridge rejects with inferiority complexes. Of course the University will come out and defend themselves and condemn such behaviour but it's nothing new. Heard countless stories of the twats at Durham university 🤷‍♂️

Long live regional accents, and who are those bone idle, chinless prats to criticise anyway? 🙄

This kind of behavior has no place in higher education, or any educational system for that matter. Any direct or tacit condoléance of staff to these behaviors has to be of concern to leadership in the institution.

Products of the private school system. Horrible, damaged people from environments where bullying and hierarchies of aggression are normalized. I hope the uni fixes it, but there are many better Unis in the meantime for bright state schoolers.

Name them and shame them.

I was lucky to have a good group of friends but there were plenty of times people mocked my accent and I don’t even have a strong one. Even worse being a disabled, poor northern student there.

Well, when you can no longer the EU ... what's left? This month, regional bullying. Next month, running battles with your neighbours. Great Britain, 2020, after 10 years with the Conservatives

students from the outside regions and studying in the North are bullying the local students? WTF?

The likes of Durham and St Andrews, are the Oxbridge for the 'less bright'. Explains a lot: A bit 'Made in Chelsea'.

Are the ones who practice this toxic attitude also the ones who ride their bikes on the city's roads in the winter months without lights?

Not surprised. One of the Profs at Durham was crying that the animal that beheaded the teacher in France was wrongfully killed. Sounds like a proper cesspit of terrible attitudes and views.

Knew a guy from London who went there in the 90's. Felt very alienated because of his Cockney accent...seems it's a culture thing maybe.

Durham is northern England🤦‍♂️

Isn’t Durham in Northern England Or I have stepped into the abyss

pretty sure id have been had up for lasciviously if not violently homosexual retorts - duck

I've had the misfortune to interact with quite a few recent graduates and, TBH, they are all similar.

Had the huge misfortune to take one of my amazing daughters to their open day last year. Incompetence beyond belief from the organisers & students of a 'certain type' ...a tory breeding ground if you will! We & many others walked out! Great lunch by the bridge though!

I'm not surprised. Some institutions have an attitude at the various leadership levels that enable this culture.

Appalled at this. The vast majority of my friends at Durham back in the early 90s were 'Northern', like me. We didn't experience any prejudice at all, though we were all in the hill colleges and not the 'posh ones' in the town😂 StAidansCollege was amazing! Good memories.

Like many have said , it’s the entitled Oxbridge rejects . Daughter went to Cambridge , of 12 doing her subject at her college , 10 were state school educated , and from all over the country . She had a wonderful experience .

20 years ago the Durham rep at a University fair told me not to even pick up a prospectus as they had very high admission requirements. I was predicted and achieved higher than they asked for, but wouldn't even consider applying after that. UniversityLeeds was far more welcoming

Pretentious snobs! Classism

Some unis just radiate this. When my son was doing open days we visited one similar status as Durham as working class locals & by the end of the day we both felt sick & he knew he never wanted to set foot their again. Toxic, exclusive, vile we were made to feel like interlopers

Yo naomiruthsmith why is this trending... 👨🏿‍💻

So let me get this straight, we're an entire fifth of the way through the 21st century, durham_uni, and your number one priority is LOLZ POR PPL ARE FUNY WITH THERE ACCENTS ALL RONG DONT WANT YOU HERE. Not just students, but faculty staff too!? The fuck wrong with you people!?

Why isn't it made clear much earlier - in school - that all bullying is unacceptable and differences are there to be celebrated?

DURHAM MORONS are 40 years behind rest of country in terms of racism!

Sad to see - I'm from coal-mining families & a NW council estate - I went to Durham in 1979 & the only incident of mockery re. my accent was 1st week from a Surrey room-mate - just hadn't heard it before. The Porter's Lodge local was fab. with beautiful Geordie accent & dialect

All male hall of residence in an actual castle in the middle of town full of jumped up oxbridge wannabes? Ideal breeding ground for this kind of behavior. I never saw any of this when I was doing my masters over in the business school. Mind you, we were all northerners there.

This is upsetting but not surprising. When I was at Durham, whenever I spoke in class 'posh' students would give me funny looks as if I didn't know what I was talking about, despite the fact I consistently got firsts on my essays and graduated with the highest marks on my course.

Engineering Geology MSc Durham second place I considered after Imperial College MSc soil mechanics engineering geology soils mechanics and engineering seismology following UCW Aberystwyth BSc Wales Good staff Research and well composed coursework

Maybe David Lammy should look into this?

As our closest, therefore local University an application to study here would reduce costs but I can't deny I find the content of this article worrying.

The attitude of entitlement some of these chinless clowns have comes from mummy and daddy. They’re from affluent commuter towns and villages in the South East which are predominantly white Middle class areas and they have no sense or skills when dealing with normal people.

As a graduate of Durham, all I can say is about bloody time!

Toughen up, nancy pants.

This sounds like total wokollocks to me. Last time I checked Durham was in the North of England

Some of the attitudes of some students at these 'top universties' is really poor.

UK belongs to the past.
