More than 220 Cambridge University freshers have been told to self-isolate for two weeks after a coronavirus outbreak at an accommodation block.
Homerton College said students in West House were told to quarantine from yesterday after 18 positive cases were identified across 11 households.In a statement posted on their website last night, Homerton College said the decision to quarantine 223 students was based on advice from Public Health England and ‘information from the university’s rigorous testing programme’.It added: ‘This preventative step to reduce the chance of transmission within the wider College, the University and the city.
‘The students in affected households are self-isolating, and the College has brought in additional staff over the weekend to support them. Homerton College said the decision was based on advice from Public Health England and the university’s ‘rigorous’ asymptomatic testing system However, a first year student at Homerton toldthey received an email at 9.28pm telling students that from 9.30pm they had to stay in their rooms until October 30.
The unnamed resident said students ‘had no chance’ to stock up on essentials and that they ‘still haven’t been told’ if they can use their communal kitchens or get food deliveries.
