My mother was a product of the Queens public school system. Proud of her upbringing, she wanted me to be part of this lineage. As a child, I was sent to a public school in New York. I remember playing with cockroaches in the cafeteria and eating semifrozen peanut butter and jelly Uncrustables for lunch. I remember the smell of rot, the broken toilets, the broken windows. I remember seeing a school in disrepair, which I wouldn’t describe as such until later in my life.
I’ll never forget the first day I went to the new cafeteria of my private middle school. Suddenly, I had a million options for lunch. I saw kids throwing their half-eaten sandwiches in the trash, when, just a few weeks earlier, I knew kids were still hungry after lunch. The stratification of our school system reflects the stratification of our country.
I went to a private school in DE from 1st to 12th grade and yeah, it was a terrible culture. My school wasn't even the most hateful in the area, but I remember looking down at 'scholarship kids' for not having 'earned' their spot (🤢) as if I had earned mine.
Not sure if she made her argument in a persuasive way.

I know there are many kids who had horrible social experiences in public schools that would beg to differ
