Parents, teachers and principals have joined forces to fight a proposal to reduce the length of school suspensions, arguing it would weaken schools’ ability to deal with violent students.
Teachers, principals and parents have united to fight a plan to reduce the length of school suspensionsUnder the proposal, the maximum school suspension would be cut from 20 to 10 days, and students from kindergarten to year 2 could only be sent home for serious physical violence, and for no longer than five days.It comes as statistics show vulnerable students - particularly those with disabilities - are over-represented in suspensions.
Disability advocates have welcomed the proposed changes. The policy is open for consultation until October 11. Craig Petersen, head of the Secondary Principals Council, said the existing suspension rules were clear and fair, and were used as a last resort when other strategies failed. “[A suspension is] the time out philosophy,”’ he said. “Let's take the child out of the school, and sort things out and work out how to get them back in and on track.”
JordsBaker If student suspensions are designed to provide time for schools to build a plan, gain expert support and to more successfully manage a difficult student, it seems odd that in most cases more than 10 days is needed to complete that task.
JordsBaker The academic commentator played the race card. Not surprising or helpful.
JordsBaker My son was suspended for forgetting his blazer twice... suspended for 3 days...
