Opening up school ovals and playgrounds to the public could provide tens of thousands of people in Melbourne with much-needed parklands during the coronavirus lockdown, analysis shows.

Dr Blackham said the pressure points varied. Some residents could live next door to a park in a suburb where most other people lived more than 400 metres away, for example.Finding green space is expensive, particularly in the established inner-suburbs. Dr Blackham said sharing school ovals and golf courses was an achievable way to plug those inequalities.

“They can still jump the fence these days, but people don't, they are far more respectful of the school and appreciative of what's around them,” Dr Piazza said. The Department of Health and Human Services said that it was up to each school to decide whether it could open its grounds, but it would require daily cleaning during the pandemic.

“Opening up school grounds to general use is problematic and complex. This applies to all schools, regardless of sector.”

Not unless city councils guarantee to repair the inevitable damage and pay for the extra cleaning.

Asher_Wolf Wait, I'm not allowed on the oval? Must have nice people at the school near me.

Experts discover that more parkland equals more parkland.

I’ve seen it work overseas. Many using the facilities are families who have children attending the school and it’s great if there’s some night lighting for older people to walk and exercise in the evenings

No it’s time to end the lockdown. Why create opportunities for deflection for our crazed premier?

And who cleans up after them each day with the amount of dog waste that owners do not pick up. Emptying the bins before school who pays for that? If someone plays on the playground with Covid after school hours and then a student tests positive.

Why does anyone need to walk to a place, just go round in circles outside you home. Simples.

Just life the damn 5km? Instead of letting people into schools? Come on

Right and who’s going too pay for the cleaning of the playground etc every time the public uses i?

I,m within easy walking distance of at least 8 sports ovals/facilitys but no “parks” i can think of....how about some simple green space?...

How about simply providing “parkland” y,know trees paths plants maybe a pond...instead of yet another multi purpose sports venue ....? 😡

The most livable city in the world?

And what happens when school equipment gets damaged and golf courses get torn up?

A sound idea. People would appreciate the opportunity to help balance the mental anguish created from this lockdown. We have all contributed to it through our taxes so why can’t we enjoy it. I’m sure people will respect the spaces.

Does the State Opposition support this How do we find the leader to ask ?
