Having students wait 12 months for third-level places 'isn't acceptable'

Yesterday it emerged that errors were discovered in this year's Leaving Certificate calculated grades process.

"It isn't acceptable to say to them you must now wait 12 months, you can look for a job or do a course that wasn't your first choice. "It is at that point that job should have begun but unfortunately we only began to expand third level places right at the last hour so that is some of the reason we are in this difficulty."Mr Ó Laoghaire said this is one of the biggest constraints in universities and they need to identify where shortfalls are and resolve them to try to ensure these students get their places.

"They knew about this since last week but they didn't tell the students, they didn't tell the parents and they didn't tell the teachers. Also speaking on Morning Ireland she said she understands why the Department of Education withheld the information from students, saying she believes their intention was to wait until they had all the details before telling those impacted.

"And they are also impacted by the need to have social distancing in universities. I think it's going to be tricky."
