COVID-19 can damage brain, result in stroke —Neurologist punchhealthwise

A professor of Internal Medicine/Neurology at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Yomi Ogun, says COVID-19 can cause damage to the brain, spinal cord and the peripheral nerves.Encephalitis is the inflammation of the brain, experts say.

“There is a receptor for the virus in the body, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and once it gets there, it can migrate to the cell. “In some patients, they present with convulsion and seizures; they may have some abnormal movement and they may have myoclonic jerks which will make them to jerk abnormally.

“On brain inflammation, it could progress to encephalopathy because the patient won’t be able to breathe well. It will destabilise the system because the patient becomes restless, confused, subconscious and drowsy.“Like when they develop stroke, for instance, it can be seen in severe cases that will need an intensive care unit.

“Then, they have a lot of inflammation happening within the system; and because they are not moving around easily, the clot can form in the legs, which can get to the brain, damaging the lining of the vessel in the process.”
