Fears that young people have ‘lost the discipline of learning’ add to student’s money worries as part-time jobs dry up

Record numbers of young people in the UK are starting a university course this autumn, with many anxious to escape a collapsing employment market. But as students embark on a very different university experience, vice-chancellors are worried that many may not last the year.

The OU is cheaper!

No thanks to your scaremongering reporting.

Forgotten how to learn. Fuck off. Every summer they had months off. Then gap years before work. Realise uni is a waste of time maybe. That many degrees are a debit enslaving waste of time.

I’m not suprised unless it’s a course you need a degree in a move back to the 1980’s pre gcse era is needed. My generation were conned with the knowledge economy and being trained for jobs which don’t exist. Apprenticeships & Vocational study up to level 5 for trades is important

Hardly surprising when students get grades they don’t deserve, all because of the mess created by the pandemic.

Just when we need as many STEM graduates as possible to support the technology dependent world we've created Who will provide the practical science & engineering skills needed to transition to a greener economy? Who is going to solve these issues if we are all just critics?

Being a full time student of a UK university and seeing how slowly and poorly adjustments were communicated and made during the pandemic, I don't wonder why.

We've forced the government to give A* grades to anyone who wanted them so it's hardly surprising. Many who are going to university this year shouldn't be there and that will soon become apparent.

Blair's target of 50% going to University was mind boggling stupid. We will now see a winding down of the University sector as young people look at cheaper more useful alternatives. This will be accompanied by whinging and strikes at the Unis who overstretched themselves.

Daughters just gone London uni it’s all online until January - don’t understand why kids can go back to school but not universities we are paying for her to sit in a room to study which she could do that at home. All the students are mixing and are out and about socialising still

Wish my son had decided to defer. On our way now. Freshers week and virus here we all come

Not only they must take big loans to pay for University, they also have to work and worry about that? What a rotten system.

Pushing children of all ability sets into University has cheapened the value of a degree, yet education prices have gone up. It's an extension of childhood that puts you in a major debt and into an incredibly competitive undergrad jobs market.
