Richard Woods, the Republican superintendent of schools in Georgia, criticized DeVos’ decision. “It is disappointing, shows a complete disconnect with the realities of the classroom, and will be a detriment to public education,” he said in a statement.
DeVos’ letter cites a request from a broad coalition of groups calling on the Trump administration to enforce federal testing requirements, including the Center for American Progress, the National Urban League, the Education Trust and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Sen. Patty Murray , the top Democrat on the Senate education committee, also emphasized the importance of assessments required by federal law. “Especially when it comes to the disparities that harm so many students of color, students with disabilities and students whose families have low incomes, we’ve got to have data that shows us where we’re falling short so we can better support those students,” she said.

An interesting issue. Students are still being taught, if more creatively, lessons necessary so why not test them, just in a virtual way as they are learning it now? I understand the pause in the spring but we need to get back to learning and measuring our teachers & schools.

Why would they be stopped? It can be done safely. Homework may be difficult for kids in broken homes to do. Sometimes these tests are THE way for those students to prove that their intelligence is one of many factors in a gpa. They can use them to prove they are misrepresented.

Students and teachers should embrace computer and internet-based classes. First, we have a real-time evaluation of the student's progress and having mastered topics and concepts. Particularly in math and sciences. Second, the notion of national testing is needed.
