The new school year is beginning in the United States, but with the country still recording tens of thousands of new cases of COVID-19 each day, some parents, teachers and students are facing an agonising choice.

There is a sadness and anger in equal measure when 29-year-old American primary school teacher Ashley Newman speaks.

"Our options are either deal with it and risk your health and your family's health, or you can leave," she says. Worried school staff have held protests over what they say is a lack of care for their safety. But the push to reopen schools in America comes from the very top.Ms Newman's decision to resign is one the President of the United States would not applaud.Loading

The US Centers for Disease Control has ultimately recommended schools reopen, saying the health risks should be weighed against the potential damage of being kept home. She and her son Kasin have returned to the virtual classroom after the US summer break — one as a teacher, the other a pupil."Because most of the fun things I would have at school is hanging out with my friends at lunchtime."Kasin's big sister, Kiamsha, finished her final year of high school online in June.

She is making the exciting move to New York City to study fashion merchandising, but Kiamsha is well aware it could all be taken away at a moment's notice by the virus. Reagan, JJ and Carter will have to learn in the classroom from inside plexiglass pods when they go back to school.

She's 29! I'll assume her husband is similar age and a 2 year old child. They're at almost zero risk of harm from covid! We pay for this rubbish 'journalism'...

More teachers are rising up! We respect the choose from everyone.

She was probably a shit teacher anyway and used this as an excuse

Not News. Not ballanced. Not representative. Not going to make anyone better informed about the important things to consider when dealling with coronavirus

Where is the ABC’s outrage over Vic Police arresting people in their homes for planning protests? I thought the ABC held gov to account and supported the people, ESPECIALLY their right to protest.. or is it only perceived left wing protests you support?

Everyone should be free to make those choices for themselves.
