KUALA LUMPUR: Some 500,000 public university students have benefited from the government's decision to reduce the fees for dormitories, services and activities at public universities by 15% due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Dewan Rakyat has been told.

However, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mansor Othman said the ministry remains concerned following feedback from students, parents and other relevant parties.

“The discount will be given for the second semester of the 2019/ 2020 academic session, involving an allocation of RM72mil and benefiting a total of 523,318 public universities students across the country after the decision was made," he told Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun during Question Time in Parliament on Wednesday .

Mansor said this fee reduction was in addition to other initiatives including the RM200 one-off payment under the Bantuan Prihatin Nasional initiative, involving a RM168.3mil allocation that benefited 841,646 students. "The initiative will involve collections amounting to RM750mil, benefiting almost 1.5 million PTPTN borrowers," he said.
