Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says “there is a real lesson” political parties in Western Australia and Queensland can learn from the Northern Territory election. WA and Qld have fast approaching state elections scheduled to take place before the end of 2020. Given the less than emphatic election result in the Northern Territory, Mr Clennell said there was a greater likelihood Scott Morrison would be able to convince premiers to open their borders.
“It looks like Michael Gunner will form a government, but he’s going to fall over the line in three or four seats if he does”. “It wasn’t the thumping majority you’d expect if voters were saying ‘yes we’re going to vote for you for you COVID response and for keeping the hard borders”. This suggests Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk won’t be able to run on a political platform which focuses solely on the coronavirus and hard border closures, Mr Clennell said.
