Teens are being stretched thin as they juggle online schooling, jobs and helping their families during the pandemic. Some educational experts say the crisis has the potential to deepen inequalities between kids from different economic backgrounds.

Educational disruptions forced by the pandemic are hurting teenagers at a time when many families also are struggling with layoffs and child care for young kids — challenges that are expected to persist as a new school year gets underway, largely with remote learning.

The transition from high school to college can be rocky for many teens, and the coronavirus crisis could widen the gap between kids with wealthier, college-educated parents and their lower-income peers, Mathern said.Mathern’s group works with hundreds of U.S. institutions and is affiliated with Gateway to College, which helped Apuzzo improve her grades before the pandemic. Now, she’s planning to work for a year before enrolling in college.

“It’s definitely interrupting my life. At the same time, I’m doing the things I need to, to keep me healthy and keep my family together,” Spann said. “I’m pretty much the only one out of my friends who is still in school,” she said. “They had dreams of going to a four-year college. COVID put that on hold for them.”

Some 'experts' will say anything you want if it gets them some spotlight. People have a lot to do. Always have.

hey how about stop being jerks to each other and maybe that’ll solve a lotta problems

You surely not proposing the opposite? Making us all the same? You some kind of communist? Soviets are gone to dust. Give over.

Poor snowflakes. Life is so unfair.

Prepare for the septigenarians commenting 'well I worked 100 hours a week at a garage, a pizza parlor and enlisted in the reserves and got placed 50th in my graduating class and I walked to school every day and joined the Skull and Bones society too and I turned out fine.'

The sheer number of assholes claiming children should just deal with the shitshow adults created is appalling

Teens need to toughen up. Stop coddling them. The more you baby them, the worse this stuff gets and the more drugs Big Pharma prescribes. They need to grow some thicker skin.

Examine the trend of countries growing or starting to grow. They tend not to talk about entititlement and more on owning up to their situation. Americans, stop victimizing yourself.

You can thank China. Don't support their economy. Working hard is not a bad thing. Is this damn China virus that makes easiest things a burden. World enemy number 1.

Neoliberalism has failed

Life’s a bitch, grow up!

Always about race i see

OMG! Maybe we should stop raising our children as snowflakes and have them actually learn how to deal with adversity. Coddling them doesn't work.

Sadly, for these teens to live this way because of the China-virus by the Communist Paganistic China monsters

😢😢😢🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I don’t think you need to be an expert to realize that.

stating the obvious makes you an expert now

The hysteria the adult world has put on these kids is shameful. Too many stupid people in the USA believe the MSM propaganda and now our kids are paying the price.

Welcome to the real world

Yeah

Teacher unions are arguing that concerns about the health and safety of educators and staff are being left out of the debate. This is simply not true. Why is it other professions such as nurses and those on the front lines are made to go back to work but teachers are exempt?

Dxron2 Welcome to the adult world. No work no car no gas no clothes no roof. Maybe these young adults will appreciate they have more.

Kids have been juggling work and school for years. Maintaining their own health so that they do not infect family may be stressful. But in these trying times it's better to be safe than sorry.

welcome to the real world,

Students have been doing this for decades, balancing school, work, extracurricular activities and challenges from home. The motivation made us richer, not poorer.

This sounds like everyone's teenage years, LOL.

Old people here sound like a shit Hovis ad

Teens with jobs without skills and a high minimum wage? Where is this happening?

Parents, take extra interest in your child's mental health...

LIFE is reality - some have - some don’t. Get over it! I’ll never be realDonaldTrump rich - doesn’t mean someone else owes me.

It already has.

Well, I'm betting on the student that passed Chemistry AND Chinese with all the other responsibilities she juggled. That took some hardcore study skills. :)

CBS News legal analyst said the chances of Mr. Trump being charged with a crime goes DOWN dramatically if he is reelected in 2020. ........Orange 🍊 dude is scheming /plotting 24/7 and OVERTIME to stay in office !

Who gives a shit?

Good! Teens should get a job. It is call the real world and learning responsibility. I want to make sure my kids never leach or live off the system.

Just sitting here watching more of our wealth trickle upwards.. capitalism kills.

20 years ago they were referred to as young adults. The only inequalities today are how new your iPhone is. Helping kids face adulthood isn’t a priority anymore. I see parents making up health disorders for their kids simply for attention.

We are entering hard times, thanks boomers

43 year old full time single parent, working a full time job and going to school so it isn't just teens. They're young, they'll rebound.

when did they stop doing all that ?

Too late

Umm ok.

Deepening inequality is what the Democrats are all about, of course they will keep everything shut down

Kids have jobs? None that I know

Don’t forget masterbating too

OPEN THE COUNTRY....the ElectionInfection is ruining our country over POLITRICKS

Welcome To adulting early 😉

You know instead of saying may, say it is and focus on solutions. We all know that it is adversely affecting certain children more than others. It’s inevitable

Definitely!

Welcome to the real world, teens.

Always have to remember kids are people too!

In other words remote schooling is bad for children, rich or poor.

poor kids having to deal with real life sucks man, just sucks

With the growing child obesity problem, they could use a little more stretching.....

This is all being done intentionally in an attempt to destroy Trump. Everybody knows it. It's gonna backfire. Trump2020Landslide

Our kids deserve to be kids. Some states have made this so political.
