The dresses were bought, the suits were hired, but for many year 12s, the school formal is a rite of passage they will no longer get to experience | melly_singer

"The second I saw it, I was in love with it," she says of the two-piece purple outfit with a one-of-a-kind graffiti design, upcycled from a vintage find by a friend of a friend. "I was really excited to wear it."

In 2019 she attended Bradfield's formal with her boyfriend, who was then in year 12. But it's not the same as doing it with your year level, she says. "The formal was our last hurrah to be with each other and celebrate everything we have experienced and overcome," she says.Jaimie and her friends are determined to mark the end of their schooling in another, permissible way, such as a smaller gathering or a night away.

"Events arranged by students at external venues, without the involvement or knowledge of the school or department, are the responsibility of the students and the venues," the spokeswoman said. "In the current climate, the department strongly discourages holding these events."

melly_singer This is not a rite of passage. These kids are just copying American tv shows. This is a new phenomen and can quite easily be altered.

melly_singer We all just jumped in the town centre fountain for our end-of-school celebration on our final afternoon. No formals back then. No fake tans, no fake nails, no pressure. A simple life can be beautiful. The kids will survive and be even more resilient.

melly_singer melly_singer Canadian students began innovating with virtual formals, why can't we do it here?

melly_singer Hysterical madness. There is no science to blanket banning or locking down. Just another example of incompetent Libalab

melly_singer This ‘human interest’ story is the dopiest way into a very important issue any journalist could think of.

melly_singer Jaimie needs to get her priorities sorted.

melly_singer People are dying or being left incapacitated for months by this virus but nothing compares to the heartache this self absorbed generation is feeling right now because they can’t go to a their formal .....

melly_singer Not the end of the world. I promise.

melly_singer Good grief, since kindy?

I thought the formal afterparty was THE rite of passage. That was where the real action was...not that stuffy formal sanctioned by the school and teachers.

melly_singer So sad. FMD, is this where we are at?

melly_singer No functions in case of spread but they can still gather in classrooms right?

melly_singer i left school in 1991 and many didn't go to my formal because i could not afford a suit. I went to after-parties but. It was not a big thing going to a school dinner part. Like a wedding, Just go to the reception it the fun part i'd miss.

melly_singer Fingers crossed they can have their graduations and formals in November instead! 🤞

melly_singer I remember hiring a suit with a cummerbund (had to check the spelling). Had the after party at my place, where someone stole a carton of mt dads beer and someone else was caught with a bong. So many highlights

melly_singer It’s sad 😞 when you wait your whole life

melly_singer How about we reframe what is important. Instead of ‘rites of passage’ many of which are disappointing how about we focus on what we as individuals can control? Enjoying the sun on our face, blue sky, trees, waves etc.

melly_singer Blame ScoMo and the State Premiers for blowing this virus out of all proportion and subsequently imposing completely draconian measures (naturally as part of their usual political games).

melly_singer As if you’ve been excited about the year 12 formal since kindy! 🤣🤣🤣

melly_singer Welcome to the new abnormal!!

melly_singer So she can't wear her new dress....BIG DEAL...the safety of our elderly outweighs any party.

melly_singer Sounds like a first world problem

melly_singer All for a slightly-bad flu.

melly_singer Good. So many children are never given the tools to reach graduation because they can't conform or meet set standards that are not inclusive or flexible. Think of them
