A school board member and Portsmouth’s top public defender also face charges.

Longtime Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas, 76, is among a handful of prominent local figures charged with felonies for their involvement in a June protest in the wake of George Floyd’s death that resulted in damage to several Confederate monuments in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Terry McAuliffe quickly came to Lucas’ defense after the charges were announced Monday, calling her “a trailblazing public servant,” and saying “Her opposition to a racist monument is the definition of what John Lewis called ‘good trouble.
